Have you ever felt like you were breathing underwater?
Like you were surrounded by everything you were "supposed" to want: the collection of gadgets and gizmos, the comfort of the familiar: yet your heart was screaming for a different world? Have you ever looked at your life and realized that despite having "everything," you are still desperately thirsty?
Will it be easy to admit that? No.
Is it the first step toward a miracle? Absolutely.
Welcome back to The Grace-Led Life, sister. Today, we are diving deep: deeper than the ocean floor: as we continue our series on Disney Princesses and the Women of the Bible. Last time, we sat with Cinderella and Ruth. Today, we’re looking at a mermaid who gave up her voice and a woman at a well who finally found hers.
We’re talking about Ariel and the Samaritan Woman.
Both were seekers. Both were misunderstood. And both had a thirst that could not be quenched by anything this world (or the sea) had to offer.
The Ache for "Part of Your World"
Ariel had it all. She was a princess of the undersea kingdom, daughter of a powerful King, and heir to a literal throne. Yet, she spent her days scavenging through shipwrecks for "treasures" that didn't belong to her world. She was looking for identity in things that were never meant to satisfy her.
Sound familiar?
How often do we scroll through social media or walk through the aisles of a store, filling our "caverns" with things we think will make us feel human, only to realize we're still longing for the sun?
Fact #1: Your Longing is a Compass, Not a Curse.
The ache you feel for "something more" isn't a sign that you are ungrateful. It’s a sign that you were made for another Kingdom. Just as Ariel felt the pull of the world above, your soul feels the pull of the Heavens. The Enemy wants you to think that thirst is a defect. The Truth? It's a homing beacon for your Creator.
Truth vs. Lie: The Source of Satisfaction
In John 4, we meet a woman who didn't live in a palace. She lived in the heat of the day, carrying a heavy jar to a well. She had been through five husbands, and the man she was with wasn't her husband. She wasn't just thirsty for water; she was thirsty for belonging, for worth, and for a love that didn't leave.
The Lie: If I just get the right relationship, the right job, or the right "voice," I will finally be enough.
The Truth: Only the Living Water can satisfy a soul made by God.
"Jesus answered, 'Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.'"
: John 4:13-14
Spiritual Truth: We often try to negotiate with "Ursulas": the voices of the world that promise us our dreams if we just give up our voice, our values, or our identity. But Jesus doesn't ask for a bargain. He asks for your burden.
The Price of the Voice
Ariel's greatest mistake was thinking she had to be silent to be loved. She traded her most precious gift: her voice: to get to the world she desired. She thought her "surface-level" appearance would be enough to win the Prince.
But the Samaritan woman? She found her voice at the well.
When she met Jesus, He didn't ask her to hide her past. He exposed it: not to shame her, but to heal her. He saw her mess, her thirst, and her isolation, and He offered her a seat at the table of the Kingdom. She didn't have to change into a different "species" to be accepted. She just had to receive the Grace that was already standing in front of her.
And what did she do? She ran. She didn't stay silent. She became the first evangelist, shouting from the rooftops (or the town square) about the Man who told her everything she ever did.
How to Battle the "Surface-Level" Life
If you’re feeling like you’re treading water today, it’s time to move from the ocean to the Well. We have to stop making deals with the Enemy and start having conversations with the Savior.
Here is how you pivot from inspiration to application:
- Audit Your "Cavern": Grab your faith journal and write down three things you’ve been chasing to feel "complete." Is it a number on the scale? A title at work? A relationship?
- Identify the Bargain: Are you giving up your "voice" (your peace, your prayer time, your boundaries) to keep someone else happy?
- Track Your Thirst: Use a bible study planner to document your daily encounters with the Word. When you feel that restless "Ariel" energy, sit with John 4 for fifteen minutes.
- Use Your Voice: The Enemy wins in the silence. Use inspirational stickers for journaling or affirmation cards to speak Truth over your life until you believe it.
Fact #2: Stewardship Begins at the Well
We cannot steward the vision God has given us if we are dehydrated. Ariel nearly lost everything because she was acting out of desperation. The Samaritan woman changed her entire community because she was acting out of overflow.
You are a masterpiece, a winner, and a key part of the plan. But you cannot pour from an empty jar.
Truth vs. Lie: The Journey Home
The Lie: I have gone too far/done too much to be part of His world.
The Truth: Triton sacrificed his crown for Ariel; Jesus sacrificed His life for you. The Father-King has already paid the debt. You aren't "part of His world" because you earned it: you're part of it because you were born for it through Grace.
Sweet sister, stop trying to grow legs and run toward a world that will never love you back. Turn your eyes toward the Well. The Water is free. The identity is secure. And your voice? It’s time to find it again.
You are seen. You are loved. And your thirst has a name: It’s a longing for the Father.
Stay thirsty for the things that matter, and let the rest wash away.
With so much love and grace,
Charlet Billings
