Holding Up the Prophet’s Hands: What Moses, Aaron, and Hur Teach Us About God-Given Friendships

Will you make it to the finish line of your God-given calling all by your independent, self-sufficient self? No!

Let’s be honest, sister. How often do we fall into the exhausting trap of spiritual rugged individualism? We grit our teeth, pull our hair into a messy bun, open our faith journal, and whisper, "Lord, I've got this. I can carry this assignment on my own." But heaven didn't design you to be a solo island. God’s architectural blueprint for your life includes divine alignment, sacred partnerships, and women who know how to step into the trenches and lift your arms when fatigue sets in.

Today, we are looking at two distinct relationships from the book of Exodus: Moses and Aaron versus Moses and Hur. These aren't just dusty historical accounts; they are divine masterclasses in fellowship. They teach us the vital difference between a connection that merely looks good on the surface and a God-given bond that alters the trajectory of your destiny.

Grab your favorite prayer journal, pour a warm cup of herbal tea, and let’s unpack what the Word has to say about who you are letting into your inner circle.

Fact #1: Moses and Aaron , The God-Given, Complicated Partnership

"Then the Lord’s anger burned against Moses and he said, 'What about your brother, Aaron the Levite? I know he can speak well… You shall speak to him and put words in his mouth; I will help both of you speak and will teach you what to do.'" , Exodus 4:14-15

When God called Moses from the burning bush, Moses did not feel equipped. He had speech impediments, deep insecurities, and a heavy stutter. Did God tell him to practice public speaking in front of a mirror? No! God provided a person.

Truth vs. Lie:

  • The Lie: A God-given friendship will always be effortless, smooth, and free of friction.
  • The Truth: Divine alignments are forged in purpose, which means they often stretch your patience, challenge your pride, and require radical grace.

Aaron was not chosen because he and Moses shared the same favorite hobbies or finishing-school etiquette. He was chosen by divine mandate. They were two completely different personalities: Moses the hesitant visionary, Aaron the eloquent voice: paired together by the Creator to accomplish the impossible.

Yet, was it messy? Absolutely. Think about the golden calf incident in Exodus 32, where Aaron cuckolded under pressure while Moses was on the mountain. Think of the moments when Aaron and Miriam challenged Moses' leadership. Divine friendships are not immune to human failure. But because their assignment was bigger than their egos, they weathered the storms together. They were called together for a purpose that shook empires!

Fact #2: Moses and Hur : The Steadfast, Supporting Sanctuary

"When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up: one on one side, one on the other: so that his hands remained steady till sunset." : Exodus 17:12

Fast forward to the valley of Rephidim. Joshua is fighting Amalek down below, while Moses stands on the hilltop holding the staff of God. As long as his hands are raised, Israel wins. But human strength has limits. Gravity wins. Fatigue creeps in.

Enter Hur.

Unlike Aaron, Hur wasn’t the eloquent spokesman. He didn't have the grand title of High Priest. He was the quiet stabilizer. He didn't need the spotlight; he needed the victory of God’s people. Together with Aaron, Hur did something revolutionary: they didn't just cheer Moses on from a distance; they got under his heavy arms and held them up.

Sister, who is holding up your arms when the spiritual warfare gets intense?

When the enemy whispers lies into your mind, whispering that you are failing as a mother, a leader, or a child of God, you don't need a surface-level cheerleader who sends heart emojis. You need a Hur. You need a woman of God who recognizes your weariness, slides a stone beneath your feet, and says, "I've got your right arm. You rest."

Contrast: God-Given vs. Not-Given Friendships

How do you discern the difference between a divinely appointed relationship and a casual connection that drains your spiritual oil? Let’s lay it out clearly:

  • God-Given Friendships (The Moses, Aaron & Hur Model):

    • Anchored in Purpose: They point you back to your north star: Jesus Christ and your God-given calling.
    • Honest & Accountable: They can speak hard truths in love without you feeling condemned.
    • Sacrificial Support: They show up in the trenches, holding your arms up when you are too exhausted to fight.
  • Not-Given Friendships (The Surface-Level Trap):

    • Anchored in Convenience: They thrive when things are fun, but evaporate the moment ministry, sacrifice, or spiritual growth gets uncomfortable.
    • Compromise-Driven: They encourage you to shrink back, dim your light, or compromise your convictions to "fit in."
    • Energy-Draining: You leave every interaction feeling spiritually depleted rather than fueled for the harvest.

How to Battle: Cultivating Your God-Given Circle

If you want to walk in victory, you cannot afford to have unassigned anchors dragging down your boat. You have a destiny to fulfill, and the garden of your life requires intentional weeding and planting.

Here is your battle plan for cultivating holy friendships:

  1. Audit Your Inner Circle: Open your christian journal prompts section and write down the names of the five people you spend the most time with. Ask the Holy Spirit: Are these women holding up my arms, or are they adding weight to my shoulders?
  2. Pray for Divine Alignment: Stop trying to force friendships that require you to wear a mask. Pray specifically: "Lord, send me my Aaron and my Hur: women who love You fiercely and will stand with me in the battle."
  3. Be the Hur You Are Looking For: Before you complain about a lack of deep community, ask yourself: Whose arms am I holding up today? Send an encouraging text, drop off a cup of coffee, or invite a sister to use our faith-based affirmation cards together.

Faith Journaling Prompts for Deeper Reflection

Take these bible journaling prompts to your quiet time this week. Let the Holy Spirit examine the soil of your heart and relationships:

  • Prompt 1: In what areas of my life am I currently trying to stand alone like Moses on the hill? Where do I need to humble myself and admit I need support?
  • Prompt 2: Think of a current friendship that feels strained or complex (like Moses and Aaron). Is this a divinely ordained friction refining my character, or a misaligned connection I need to release?
  • Prompt 3: Lord, show me one sister in my life right now whose arms I can help lift this week. What practical act of service or prayer can I offer her?

A Closing Prayer

Lord God Almighty,

Thank You for designing us for community. Thank You that You never intended for us to walk this narrow road alone. Forgive us for the times we have leaned on our own self-sufficiency, pride, and independence. Send divine alignments into our lives: Aarons to speak truth alongside us, and Hurs to hold up our weary arms when the battle is fierce. Purify our circles, root out ungodly soul ties, and plant us deeply in gardens of grace and purpose.

You have called us masterpieces, and You have equipped us for victory. Give us the courage to fight the good fight with our sisters standing shoulder-to-shoulder by our side.

In Jesus' mighty name, Amen.

With unwavering faith and grace,

Charlet Billings
