Will people let you down? Yes. Will the very people who claim the name of Jesus sometimes be the ones who hurt you the most? Absolutely.
But does their failure change the character of the King? Not for one single second.
Welcome to The Grace-Led Life, sis. Today, we are having a "porch talk" heart-to-heart. If you’ve been feeling discouraged, disillusioned, or like you want to walk away from the faith because of the actions of "religious" people, this word is specifically for you. We are shifting our gaze from the messy crowd to the perfect Cross.
The Great Distraction: Why We Look at the Crowd
We have a very real enemy, and his favorite tactic isn't always a direct frontal assault. Often, it’s a distraction. He wants you to look at the hypocrisy of the person in the pew next to you so you stop looking at the Savior on the throne. He wants you to focus on the gossip, the judgment, and the "messiness" of the Church so that you lose sight of the Message of the Gospel.
Listen to me, masterpiece: Your faith was never meant to be anchored in the person sitting next to you. If you anchor your soul to a human, you will eventually drift, because humans are prone to the tide. But if you anchor your soul to the Rock of Ages, you will stand firm through every storm.
Fact #1: Humans Are a Work in Progress
We have to stop expecting "finished products" in a world that is still under construction. Every single person who calls themselves a Christian is a sinner saved by grace. We are all "messy masterpieces." We are works in progress, being sanctified day by day, but we haven't "arrived" yet.
"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." : Romans 3:23
Spiritual Truth: Christianity is not a museum for saints; it is a hospital for the broken. When you see a Christian fail, don't let it shake your faith in God. Let it remind you of why we need God so desperately in the first place! The failure of the follower actually highlights the necessity of the Leader.

Truth vs. Lie: The Representation Trap
The Lie: "If that person represents Jesus, and they are mean/judgmental/unkind, then I don't want anything to do with Jesus."
The Truth: No human being is a perfect representation of Jesus. Jesus is the only perfect representation of God. When people fail to reflect His heart, it is a reflection of their own brokenness, not a flaw in His character.
We often fall into the "Representation Trap." We hold Christians to a standard of perfection that only Christ could meet. When they stumble: and they will: we feel betrayed. But we must remember that our calling is to follow the Master, not the other servants.
The "Gandhi Paradox" and Why it Matters Today
You might have heard the famous story of Mahatma Gandhi. He was deeply intrigued by the teachings of Jesus, especially the Sermon on the Mount. But when he tried to enter a Christian church, he was turned away because of his race. He famously said, "I like your Christ, but I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ."
That is a heartbreaking reality, and it should pierce our hearts. However, the tragedy of Gandhi’s experience is that he let the flawed gatekeepers keep him away from the King.
Don't let the "gatekeepers" keep you from the Grace! If someone has blocked your path or made you feel "less than," look over their shoulder. Look past their pride. Keep your eyes fixed on the One who says, "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28).

Fact #2: The Enemy Loves a "Stumbling Block"
The enemy loves to use "Christians" as stumbling blocks for "seekers." If he can use a "believer" to offend you, he can keep you from your vision and your purpose.
But you are a winner, sis. You are part of a divine plan. Do not give the enemy the satisfaction of letting someone else's bad behavior steal your inheritance in Christ. When we allow the failures of people to hinder our walk, we are essentially saying that their sin is more powerful than God’s grace. And we know that’s not true!
How to Battle: Shifting Your Gaze
So, how do we actually do this? How do we stay "deeply rooted" when the people around us are acting up? We have to be intentional about our focus.
- Stop Comparing, Start Committing: Stop comparing your spiritual journey to the behavior of others. Your walk is between you and God.
- Deepen Your Personal Study: If you rely on others to "feed" you spiritually, you will starve when they fail. You need to be in the Word for yourself. Use tools like a Bible highlighting guide bookmark to really dig into the scriptures and find the Truth for yourself.
- Guard Your Heart: It’s okay to have boundaries. You can love someone and still recognize that their actions are not aligned with Christ. Don't let their toxicity poison your well of faith.
- Identify Your "North Star": In the ancient world, sailors didn't look at the waves to find their way; they looked at the stars. People are the waves: shifting, rising, and falling. Christ is the North Star.

Fact #3: Our Standard is the Cross, Not the Crowd
The Cross is the ultimate evidence of God's love and the ultimate standard for our lives. The crowd yelled "Crucify Him!" while the Cross whispered "I forgive them."
When we look at the Cross, we see:
- Perfection: Jesus, the flawless Lamb.
- Sacrifice: Giving everything for those who didn't deserve it.
- Grace: A bridge built over our deepest failures.
When you feel like giving up on "religion," go back to the Cross. Read the Gospels. See how Jesus treated the woman at the well, the leper, and the thief. That is who you are following. In our Faith & Bible Study section, we talk a lot about getting back to the basics of who Jesus is. It’s the most important thing you can do for your mental and spiritual health.
Using Your "Stewardship" to Lead Others
If you have been hurt by Christians, you have a unique calling. You know exactly what it feels like to be discouraged by the Church. Use that experience to be the kind of Christian you wish you had encountered.
Become a steward of grace. Live a Grace-filled Lifestyle that reflects the actual heart of Jesus. Show the world that while we are messy, our God is mighty. Use your life to point people past yourself and toward Him.

Practical Steps to Stay Focused
If you're struggling to keep your eyes on the Cross today, try these "spiritual warfare" tactics:
- Write it down: Use a journal or personal development stickers to track your prayers and God’s faithfulness. When you see how God has moved in your life, the opinions of others matter much less.
- Audit your circle: Are you surrounding yourself with people who point you to Christ, or people who just complain about other Christians? Find a community that is "visionary" and "inspirational."
- Refocus your morning: Before you check social media (where the "crowd" lives), check the Word. Start your day with a Bible reading tracker to stay consistent.
A Prayer for the Discouraged Heart
Heavenly Father, I pray for the woman reading this right now who has been hurt by Your people. Lord, heal her heart. Remind her that while humans fail, You never will. Help her to shift her gaze from the crowd to the Cross. Give her the strength to stay rooted in Your Truth and the courage to keep following You, even when the path is lonely. Thank You for being the perfect Standard. Amen.
Final Thoughts: Eyes Up, Sis!
Don't let a "flawed messenger" make you reject the "Perfect Message." You were created for a high calling and a divine purpose. You are a key part of the plan!
