The Ten Words of Freedom: Living the Ten Commandments in a Modern World

Do you ever feel like you’re trying to build a beautiful life on shifting sand? Will it be easy to stay upright when the world is constantly shouting a million different "truths" at you? No!

But here’s the secret, Sis: God didn't leave us to wander through the wilderness of this modern world without a North Star. He gave us a roadmap, a foundation, and a fortress. We call them the Ten Commandments, but I like to think of them as the Ten Words of Freedom.

I know, I know. Sometimes we look at Exodus 20 and see a list of "Thou Shalt Nots" that feel like heavy chains. But let me speak some Truth into your spirit today: The enemy wants you to see these as restrictions, but our Father gave them as protections. They aren't just old rules for a desert-wandering tribe; they are the spiritual DNA of a life that prospers.

If you want to live a Grace-filled Lifestyle, you have to know where the boundaries of the garden are. Let’s dive deep into Exodus 20 (NIV) and see how these ancient words are exactly what we need for our 2026 reality.

The Anchor of Our Identity (Commandments 1-4)

The first four commandments are all about our vertical relationship. If this anchor isn't set deep into the Rock, everything else will drift.

1. "You shall have no other gods before me." (Exodus 20:3)

The Truth vs. The Lie: The world tells you that you can worship your career, your "aesthetic," or even your children, as long as it makes you happy. That is a lie.
Spiritual Truth: Anything you "must have" to be okay, other than Him, is a god. When we put God first, everything else finds its rightful place. He is the only Source that never runs dry.

2. "You shall not make for yourself an image…" (Exodus 20:4)

The Modern Struggle: We might not be bowing to golden calves, but we are experts at creating a "God" who looks just like us: one who never challenges our lifestyle or confronts our sin.
Spiritual Truth: We must worship the God of the Bible, not the God of our feelings. Use a Bible Highlighting Guide to track His actual character through the Word, not just the parts that feel good on a Sunday morning.

3. "You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God." (Exodus 20:7)

The Call: This is so much more than avoiding "bad words." It’s about not using His name to cover our own agendas. Have you ever said "God told me" just to get your way? I've been there, and it’s a dangerous game.
Spiritual Truth: We carry His name as His daughters. Let’s make sure our lives reflect His reputation.

4. "Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy." (Exodus 20:8)

Fact #1: Burnout is not a spiritual gift.
Spiritual Truth: Sabbath is an act of spiritual warfare against a culture that demands constant productivity. By resting, you are declaring: "I am not the one who keeps the world turning; God is."

Prayer and Worship

The Garden of Our Relationships (Commandments 5-10)

Once our heart is anchored in Him, we can start tending to the people around us. These commandments are the fences that keep our "gardens" safe from the predators of bitterness and greed.

5. "Honor your father and your mother." (Exodus 20:12)

Whether you had a Proverbs 31 mom or a difficult upbringing, honoring is about the office God placed them in. It’s about choosing gratitude over bitterness and building a legacy of respect for the next generation.

6. "You shall not murder." (Exodus 20:13)

Jesus upped the ante on this one, didn't He? He told us that if we harbor hatred in our hearts, we’ve already crossed the line.
How to Battle: Check your "venting" sessions. Are you assassinating someone's character over coffee? Speak life, or speak nothing.

7. "You shall not commit adultery." (Exodus 20:14)

In a world of "soft-launching" and "emotional affairs," this is your shield. Protect your covenant: or your future covenant: with everything you have.
The Truth: Intimacy is a sacred seed that only grows in the soil of total commitment. Don't scatter it to the wind for a temporary "like."

8. "You shall not steal." (Exodus 20:15)

This isn't just about shoplifting. Are you stealing time from your employer? Are you "stealing" credit for someone else's idea?
Spiritual Truth: You serve a Father of abundance. You don't need to snatch what isn't yours because He has already promised to provide everything you need.

9. "You shall not give false testimony." (Exodus 20:16)

The Lie: "It’s just a little gossip… everyone’s talking about it."
Spiritual Truth: Truth is the language of the Kingdom. Deception is the language of the enemy. Be a woman whose word is an iron-clad anchor.

10. "You shall not covet." (Exodus 20:17)

Sis, social media is a breeding ground for this. If you are scrolling through Instagram and feeling that bitter sting because she has the house, the husband, or the ministry you wanted: stop.
Fact #2: Comparison is the thief of the calling God has specifically for YOU. You are a masterpiece in progress, not a competitor in a race.

How to Battle: From Rule-Following to Heart-Living

You might be reading this and thinking, "Charlet, I’ve failed at half of these today!"

Sweet sister, join the club. That is exactly why we need the Gospel! Jesus didn't come to abolish these Ten Words; He came to fulfill them because He knew we couldn't. But now, as daughters of the King, we have the Holy Spirit inside us, writing these truths on our hearts.

If you want to move from "trying hard" to "living free," here is your battle plan:

  1. Write the Vision: Grab your journal and write down which commandment feels the hardest for you right now. Is it Sabbath? Is it coveting? Be vulnerable with God.
  2. Repent and Realign: Don't sit in shame. Repentance isn't a dirty word: it’s a U-turn toward the Father’s arms.
  3. Track Your Growth: Use tools like our 75-Day Holy Girl Tracker to stay intentional about your habits. Stewardship of your time and heart is a form of worship!
  4. Pray the Word: Ask the Holy Spirit to give you a "check" in your spirit when you’re about to speak a half-truth or scroll into a coveting spiral.

I see you, I’m praying for you, and I’m right here in the trenches with you.

With so much love,

Charlet Billings
