The Power of the Pause: Why Stillness is Where Faith Begins

Can you hear God in the noise? Sometimes.

But will you recognize His voice when your mind is racing, your phone is buzzing, and your calendar is packed from morning until night? That is the deeper question.

And here is the hard truth: faith often begins when we stop.

Not when we accomplish more. Not when we finally have every answer. Not when life becomes perfectly calm.

Stillness is where we remember that God is God, and we are not required to carry the entire world on our shoulders!

This is Day 6 of our 30-day journey, The Return & The Foundation. Today, we are returning to a spiritual discipline that the enemy wants us to overlook: silence, stillness, and the sacred pause.

Fact #1: Stillness is not laziness, it is trust

The world may tell you that slowing down means falling behind. Hustle culture praises the woman who is always available, always productive, and always moving.

But the Kingdom of God operates differently.

Stillness is not wasted time. It is intentional time with the One who gives your life direction.

When you pause before God, you are not abandoning your calling. You are allowing Him to clarify it. You are not neglecting your vision. You are placing it back in the hands of the One who gave it to you.

“Be still, and know that I am God.” , Psalm 46:10

Spiritual Truth: Stillness is an act of surrender. It says, “Lord, I trust You enough to stop striving.”

I used to believe that if I paused, everything would fall apart. If I did not respond immediately, plan constantly, or keep pushing, I feared I would miss my opportunity.

But the wake-up call came when I realized I was asking God to bless a pace He never commanded me to maintain.

I was busy, but not always obedient. Productive, but not always peaceful. Moving, but not always led.

Maybe you know that feeling too.

Lie #1: “I have to figure everything out today.”

No, beloved. You do not.

You are allowed to pray before you decide. You are allowed to wait before you respond. You are allowed to sit quietly with God without producing a perfect solution.

The enemy loves urgency because urgency can make us react without wisdom. Fear says, “Do something now!” Faith says, “Pause and listen.”

That pause may be three minutes in your car. Five minutes before opening your email. Ten minutes with your Bible and a prayer journal before the household wakes up.

Small pauses become strong roots.

A tree does not grow by pulling on its branches. It grows by deepening its roots.

The same is true for you.

Fact #2: Silence reveals what hurry hides

Silence can feel uncomfortable at first.

The moment the music stops and the scrolling ends, you may notice the thoughts you have been avoiding. The fear beneath your busyness. The grief beneath your productivity. The question you have not wanted to ask God.

This is not a sign that you are doing stillness incorrectly. It is an invitation to become honest.

God is not intimidated by your questions, emotions, disappointments, or unfinished prayers. He already knows what is in your heart. A quiet moment simply gives you room to bring it into His presence.

“Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him.” , Psalm 37:7

Spiritual Truth: Silence is not emptiness. It is a listening posture.

You do not have to fill every quiet space with words. Sometimes prayer looks like breathing slowly and remembering, God is here.

Sometimes it looks like writing one sentence in your faith journal:

“Lord, I am here. Help me notice You.”

That is enough to begin.

How to Practice the Sacred Pause

Stillness does not have to be complicated. You do not need a perfect room, a two-hour devotional routine, or a life without interruptions.

Start with five intentional minutes.

Step 1: Create space

Choose a simple place where you can sit undisturbed. It could be your bedroom, kitchen table, car, or a quiet corner of your home.

Place your phone on silent. Take a deep breath. Let your shoulders drop.

You are not rushing into this moment. You are arriving.

Step 2: Notice what is present

Ask yourself:

  • What am I feeling right now?
  • What has been taking up the most space in my mind?
  • Where do I feel rushed, afraid, or out of control?

Do not judge your answers. Just notice them.

Step 3: Release the pressure

Open your hands as a physical reminder that you are surrendering control.

Pray:

“God, I release what I cannot control. I trust You with this moment, this day, and this next step.”

You may not feel immediate peace. That is okay. Faith is not always a feeling. Sometimes faith is choosing to remain anchored while your emotions are still catching up.

Step 4: Listen before you move

Read a short passage of Scripture. Sit quietly. Write down any truth that stands out.

Do not force a dramatic revelation. God often speaks through steady wisdom, gentle conviction, and reminders of what is already true.

He may not give you the whole map. He may simply give you the next faithful step.

Prayer Journal Prompts for Stillness

Use these prayer journal prompts during your quiet time today. Write honestly. There is no perfect format for a conversation with God.

  1. Where in my life am I confusing busyness with obedience?
  2. What am I afraid will happen if I slow down?
  3. What decision or concern do I need to place in God’s hands?
  4. What thoughts become loudest when everything around me becomes quiet?
  5. Where is God inviting me to wait instead of rush?
  6. What has God already spoken that I need to remember?
  7. What does “be still and know” mean for my current season?
  8. What is one distraction I can lovingly remove during my time with God?
  9. How has God met me in a previous season of waiting?
  10. What is the next small step He may be asking me to take?

If you need a dedicated place to begin, Charlet’s “Dear God…” Prayer Journal Pages create a simple space to write prayers, praises, and confessions. Each page begins with “Dear God…”, a gentle invitation to speak with Him exactly as you are.

Truth vs. Lie: Your worth is not measured by your output

The lie: If I am not producing, I am not valuable.

The truth: You are God’s beloved daughter before you complete a single task.

The lie: Rest must be earned.

The truth: God invites you to receive His presence now.

The lie: If I pause, someone else will get ahead of me.

The truth: What God has assigned to you will not require you to destroy yourself to maintain it.

You are not a machine. You are a masterpiece.

Your calling is not sustained by frantic effort. It is sustained by grace, wisdom, stewardship, and obedience.

The Purpose Passport God-Led Planner is designed around this very rhythm, bringing spiritual growth into your everyday planning through prayer, Bible reading, weekly reflection, goals, and intentional action. Planning is powerful when it flows from God’s presence instead of panic.

A Prayer for the Pause

Father God,

I confess that I often rush ahead of You. I fill every quiet moment because I am afraid of what I might feel, hear, or face when I slow down.

Today, I choose to pause.

Help me remember that I am not alone, forgotten, or behind. Teach me to recognize Your presence in the quiet. Give me wisdom to know when to move, courage to know when to wait, and humility to follow Your lead.

Silence the voice of fear. Expose the lies of the enemy. Root me deeply in Your Word and anchor me in Your love.

Restore my peace. Renew my strength. Align my plans with Your purpose.

I trust You with my calling, my vision, my family, my work, and my next step.

In Jesus’ name, amen.

Your Stillness Challenge

For the next seven days, take one sacred pause each day.

Set a timer for five minutes. Sit with God. Breathe. Read a verse. Write in your prayer journal. Listen.

At the end of each pause, record one sentence:

“Today, God is reminding me…”

Do not measure the success of this practice by how peaceful you feel. Measure it by your willingness to return.

Some days will feel beautiful. Other days will feel distracted and difficult. Keep showing up.

A garden does not bloom because someone stared at it once. It blooms through faithful tending.

You are tending your relationship with God every time you pause.

And remember this, winner: you are not behind. You are not missing your moment. You are a key part of God’s plan, and the One who called you is faithful to lead you.

Let the world rush.

You will remain rooted.

With love and encouragement,

Charlet
