Have you ever sat down with your Bible, read through a whole chapter, and then closed the book only to realize you can’t remember a single thing you just read?
Will it be easy to stay focused every single day? No! Does the enemy want you to stay in a state of spiritual “fog” where the Word feels distant and confusing? Yes!
Listen to me, sister: your Bible is not meant to be a museum piece that stays pristine and untouched on your nightstand. It is a weapon. It is a map. It is the living, breathing Voice of the Father speaking directly into your calling. But if we only ever skim the surface, we miss the gold buried underneath.
For years, I struggled with “surface-level” reading. I’d read my chapters, check my box, and move on, completely unchanged. I felt like I was wandering in a desert without a North Star. Then, I discovered the power of a Bible highlighting guide. It changed everything. It turned my quiet time from a chore into a deep-rooted conversation with my Creator.
If you are ready to stop wandering and start witnessing the power of the Word in your life, let’s dive into this easy 5-step guide.
Fact #1: Distraction is a Spiritual Battle
The world wants your attention. Social media, your to-do list, and the “busy-ness” of life are all tools used to keep you from the Truth. When you use a highlighting guide, you aren’t just “coloring”; you are claiming territory. You are telling your brain, and the enemy, that you are here to hunt for Truth.
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” , Psalm 119:105
Spiritual Truth: Clarity is a gift from God, but focus is a discipline we must steward.
Step 1: Choose Your Categories (Planting the Seeds)
The first step to a focused study is knowing what you are looking for. You can’t find treasure if you don’t know what gold looks like! Start by deciding which themes or topics you want to highlight.
Don’t overcomplicate this! You don’t need fifty categories. Start with five or six broad themes that resonate with where you are in your season of life. Common categories include:
- The Character of God: His names, His attributes, and the work of the Holy Spirit.
- Promises & Covenants: What has He declared over your life?
- Commands & Wisdom: How are we called to live?
- Sin & Warnings: Where is the enemy trying to trip us up?
- Prayer & Praise: How do the people of God respond to Him?

Step 2: Select Your Colors and Tools (The Armor of Clarity)
Now for the fun part! Assign a specific color to each of your categories. This creates a visual language between you and the Holy Spirit. When you flip through your Bible months from now, your eyes will immediately catch the “blue” of God’s promises or the “green” of spiritual growth.
Pro-tip from your big sister: Please, please do not use regular markers! Most Bible pages are thinner than your average notebook, and the last thing you want is for your highlight to bleed through and cover the text on the other side. Look for “no-bleed” Bible highlighters or high-quality colored pencils.
At Charlet’s Stationery, we believe that the tools you use should reflect the beauty of the Message you are reading. Whether you are using a bible study planner or a dedicated journal, choose tools that make you excited to sit down at your desk.
Truth vs. Lie
Lie: “I’m not ‘artistic’ enough to color-code my Bible. It looks too messy.”
Truth: This isn’t about art; it’s about anchoring. The beauty of a highlighted Bible isn’t in the straightness of the lines, but in the depth of the roots you are growing.
Step 3: Establish Your Study Approach (The Multi-Pass Method)
This is where most beginners get stuck. They start highlighting everything and end up with a page that’s just one solid block of yellow. Don’t do that!
Instead, use the “Multi-Pass” approach.
- The First Pass: Read the passage through once without any pens in your hand. Just listen. Ask the Holy Spirit to open your eyes.
- The Second Pass: Now, go through with your bible highlighting guide printable. Mark the obvious truths first.
- The Third Pass: Look for the “connectors.” Words like therefore, but, or so that. These are the hinges that hold the scripture together!
By slowing down and reading the passage multiple times, you are meditating on the Word, not just consuming it. You are letting the seeds of Truth settle deep into the soil of your heart.

Step 4: Create a Color Key (Your North Star)
If you don’t write it down, you will forget. Trust me. I once spent a whole month highlighting “Warnings” in pink only to realize my previous pink highlights were for “Love.” It was a mess!
Create a bible highlighting guide bookmark or a small card that lists your colors and their meanings. Keep this tucked inside your Bible at all times. This acts as your North Star, keeping your study consistent whether you are in Genesis or Revelation.
Step 5: Begin Highlighting and Reflect (The Harvest)
Now, take action! As you highlight, don’t just move on. Stop and ask: “How does this truth change how I see myself? How does it change how I see God?”
Highlighting is the “how,” but reflection is the “why.” If you see a verse about God’s provision (let’s say in orange), take a moment to thank Him for a specific time He provided for you this week. This turns your study into a living sacrifice of praise.
“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” : James 1:22
Spiritual Truth: Transformation happens in the application, not just the observation.

How to Battle: Overcoming “Quiet Time” Boredom
The enemy loves to tell you that the Bible is boring or that you “just aren’t getting anything out of it.” That is a lie from the pit! When you feel that resistance, here is your battle plan:
- Audit Your Environment: Are you trying to study with your phone next to you? Put it in the other room. Stewardship of your time is stewardship of your soul.
- Start Small: Don’t try to highlight the whole book of Romans in one day. Start with five verses.
- Use a Guide: If you feel lost, use our bible highlighting guide printable to give you a structure.
- Pray for Hunger: If you don’t feel like reading, pray! Ask the Lord to give you a hunger that only His Word can satisfy.
Excuse #1: “I don’t have enough time.”
We all have the same 24 hours. The question is: what are you worshiping with your time? Spending 15 minutes deeply highlighting three verses is more valuable than spending 30 minutes scrolling through your feed. You are a woman in the Bible in the making: a woman of strength and purpose. Act like it!
